Welcome to Dr. Dilip Dental Centre, where we are delighted to offer you a new prosthesis that will restore your smile and enhance your ability to chew and speak clearly, even if you have lost some or all of your teeth. As you start wearing your new dentures, we understand that there might be an adjustment period where you’ll need to relearn certain mouth functions. These include chewing, speech, swallowing, lip posture, and ridge comfort. To help you adapt to your new dentures and ensure their proper maintenance, our team has put together the following helpful suggestions.

Discomfort

During the initial days of wearing your dentures, it’s normal to experience some discomfort. To avoid unnecessary pain, we recommend starting with a softer diet that includes easy-to-chew and nutritious foods like fish, eggs, cottage cheese, cooked potatoes, oranges, and applesauce. If you encounter any sore spots or discomfort, take out the dentures and gently massage the affected area with your finger. Allowing your gums to rest will aid in the adjustment process, and our experienced team can make precise adjustments to enhance your comfort.

Chewing

To ensure optimal stability, we advise you to chew your food using both sides of your mouth. Distributing the pressure evenly while chewing reduces the likelihood of your dentures tipping. Avoid biting with your front teeth, as this could cause the back end of the denture to lift off the gums. Instead, focus on biting with your side teeth to achieve better stability.

Swallowing

If you experience any discomfort or difficulty while swallowing, it may simply require a minor adjustment to the denture base. Our team can address this issue during your follow-up visits.

Saliva

As your mouth gets accustomed to the new dentures, you may notice changes in saliva production for a few days. This is a normal response, and your saliva flow will return to its usual level in due course.

Speech

Speech is a complex process involving various parts of the airway and mouth. Your dentures have been carefully designed to ensure stability and retention during speech. In most cases, speech sounds good right after the delivery of the dentures. However, if you feel that your speech doesn’t sound right, don’t worry. The body adapts naturally over time, and any concerns will likely resolve as you get used to your new dentures. Practice reading aloud to help facilitate the adjustment process.

Cleaning

Maintaining proper hygiene for your dentures is essential. To remove food debris and bacterial plaque, brush your dentures vigorously with a stiff denture brush. You can use soap and water or a commercially available denture cleaning agent. Avoid using regular toothpaste for cleaning, as it may damage the denture material. Effervescent soaking solutions are also effective for cleaning. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. When cleaning your dentures, make sure to do it over a basin of water or a soft cloth to prevent damage in case they are accidentally dropped on a hard surface. Additionally, don’t forget to gently massage and clean your gums and tongue with a soft toothbrush.

Sleep

For your comfort and oral health, it’s generally recommended to remove your dentures before going to sleep. This allows your gums to rest during the night.

Recall

At Dr. Dilip Dental Centre, we care about your ongoing oral health. After receiving your new dentures, we typically schedule three follow-up visits to ensure everything is going well. However, if you require additional visits, we are available to accommodate your needs. In the first year, we recommend annual recall visits to monitor changes in the shape of your ridges, wear of the teeth, and overall oral health. If you encounter any issues such as pain, difficulty chewing, or wear or breakage of the denture or its components, please don’t hesitate to contact our team at the earliest opportunity for an appointment.

At Dr. Dilip Dental Centre, we are dedicated to providing you with the highest quality dentures and comprehensive care to ensure your optimal dental health and satisfaction. Feel free to reach out to our experienced team if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to helping you achieve a beautiful and functional smile with your new dentures.
